Former Voice contestant, Christina Grimmie was targeted and shot in Florida late Friday night.
The 22-year-old was performing at The Plaza Live in Orlando, opening for Before You Exit. After performing, Grimmie was signing autographs for her fans when an unidentified gunman shot her. Reportedly, Grimmie’s brother took the man to the ground, but he turned the gun on himself during the fight. Grimmie was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Grimmie began her career by gaining fans on YouTube. She covered many hits that blew her fans away. She finished third place on season 6 of The Voice, on Adam Levine’s team.
John Mina, Orlando Police chief, reported the gunman traveled from another area in Florida to deliberately kill Grimmie. Mina said the gunman did not know Grimmie, but was a “deranged fan.” They are still searching for a motive.
CNN reports, Mina also commented the shooter “was a 21-year-old white man, and had two handguns, two additional loaded magazines and a large hunting knife.”
Orlando police credit Grimmie’s brother for preventing any further injuries or death. His instant tackle of the gunman may have saved lives.
It is unclear how the gunman made it past security. Mina commented, “As far as security, The Plaza does have security guards who wear polo shirts, they are unarmed. They do check bags and purses as people enter.”
Fans have started the hashtags #PrayForChristina and #RIPChristina to show their support on social media for the star. The Voice, as well as Adam Levine, also expressed their condolences on social media, stating, “There are no words,” and “This just isn’t fair.”
Grimmie’s incredible voice and life will be missed by her friends, family, and fans. The gunman took the precious life of a sweet girl, gone too soon. Grimmie’s publicist released the statement, “We can confirm that Christina has passed and went home to be with the Lord.”
